The difference between hot forging and cold forging is the temperature. Usually the temperature above 800? is hot forging. Hot forging is forging process that forging a metal above its recrystallization temperature The high temperature will improve the plastic of metals and help to improve the intrinsic quality of the workpiece, making it difficult to crack. High temperature could reduce the deformation resistance of metals and reduce the tonnage required of forging machines. However the hot forging products have poor accuracy of the workpiece, surface is not smooth, easy to be oxidation, decarbonization and burning. So most of them need the machining, sawing, polishing and other services.
1. Most of metal materials can be hot-forging because forging process is above the recrystallization temperature. It has a wide range of applications.
2. Compared to cold forging, the hot-forged products can be relatively large in size, shapes could be more complicated. Cold forging products are usually small in size, not too complicated.
3. Hot forging is relatively low cost, good quality. With the development of hot forging technology, some hot forgings are cheaper than the castings but have the better quality.
4. Compared to cold forging, hot forging product is not a good smooth surface. Most products require the secondary machining.
What Materials were used in hot forging?
As we said above, a lot of materials could be used for hot die forging, such as steel, aluminum, copper and alloy. However, among the most common are carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, brass alloy and aluminum alloy. If you need a better understanding of the materials of hot forging, please don"t hesitate to contact SK forging group. We could forge different types of materials from Japan, the United States, Europe, Australia and other countries.
Applications of hot forgings.?
Applications of hot forging covered major industrial sectors. In the past, the main application of hot forgings is used in the large and relatively simple products. With the closed die forging and precision forging, more and more precision parts were made by hot forging, such as shaft, gear blank, arms, flange, connecting rod, and machinery parts.

Some Useful Guide of Hot Forging
Hot forging material: transformation-toughened Al2O3/ZrO2 (tetragonal, 5-30 vol. %) composites can exhibit both large deformation strains (80%) and strain rates (> 0.001 s-1) without tearing, cavitating, or cracking during hot forging at 1500 °C. Deformability increases with ZrO2 content. The Al2O3 grains grow, develop a crystallographic orientation, and form column structures with increasing deformation.
This is a good book for the hot forging fundamentals. You may lean some useful info about hot forging and cold forging. This reference book reviews the fundamentals of forging technology, the principal variables of the forging process and their interactions, and computer-aided techniques such as finite element analysis (FEA) for forging process and tooling design.
hot forging of Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo-0. ISi (Ti-6242) was investigated in order to establish the material properties and process parameters which generally lead to shear bands and shear cracks in conventional hot forging of metals
